Frequently Asked Questions

  • For children aged 14 and younger, the first session is designed for parents or caregivers only. This provides an opportunity to discuss custody and consent, address caregiver concerns, and determine if Whimsy is the right fit for the family. Together, we’ll clarify the counselling process, including standards, limitations of confidentiality, and approaches tailored to the child’s needs. Whether meeting all together or through separate sessions, we aim to empower families with tools to problem-solve and thrive. If barriers prevent one-on-one meetings, Whimsy Counselling & Consulting is committed to accommodating your unique needs—please reach out to discuss options in advance.

For youth aged 15-16, we recommend caregivers and teens attend the first session together. Caregivers are invited to join the initial part of the session to share concerns, explore approaches, and decide if Whimsy is a good fit. Once the youth is identified as the client, caregiver involvement will be determined collaboratively, with the youth’s knowledge and consent. Attendance for youth sessions booked by caregivers must also be confirmed in advance by the teen.

Simple, flexible, and designed with your family’s needs in mind—Whimsy Counselling & Consulting is here to support and adapt at every step!

  • Neurodivergent refers to individuals whose brain functions, learning, and thinking patterns differ from what is considered "typical" or "neurotypical." This term encompasses a wide range of variations, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, mental health conditions and other neurological differences. Being neurodivergent is not a limitation—it's a reflection of the incredible diversity of human minds and the unique ways people experience and interact with the world. It's a celebration of the strengths, creativity, and perspectives that neurodivergent individuals bring to their communities.

  • Play-based therapy holds transformative power, offering a unique pathway to expression and healing. Play is often referred to as the universal language of children—it's how they naturally explore, process, and make sense of their emotions and experiences. Through the magic of play, children can communicate their inner world without the need for complex words, fostering connection and understanding.

  • Art-based therapy, transcends the spoken word, recognizing that every individual communicates differently. Whether through painting, crafting, or other creative expressions, art becomes a bridge to convey emotions and stories that might otherwise remain untold. For neurodivergent individuals and those who experience challenges with verbal processing and communication, these modalities provide a safe and affirming outlet for self-expression.

  • Most insurance plans have coverage that includes Registered Social Workers. We are also registered providers for the Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) program and on the Autism Service Provider Registry, ensuring accessible and inclusive support for those who qualify. If you have questions about coverage, feel free to reach out—we’re here to help make the process as smooth as possible.
